How High Earners Legally Bypass IRA Calculator">Roth IRA Income Limits

A Roth IRA is one of the most valuable wealth-building vehicles available: your investments compound tax-free, qualified withdrawals in retirement are 100% tax-free, and you are never forced to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) during your lifetime. However, the IRS restricts direct Roth IRA contributions once your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) crosses statutory phase-out thresholds.

Fortunately, since 2010, federal law has removed all income caps on Roth Conversions. This created the Congressionally sanctioned strategy known as the Roth IRA Calculator">Backdoor Roth IRA.

2026 Roth IRA Income Phase-Out Thresholds

  • Single / Head of Household: Phase-out begins at $150,000 MAGI and eliminates direct contributions above $165,000.
  • Married Filing Jointly: Phase-out begins at $236,000 MAGI and eliminates direct contributions above $246,000.
  • Married Filing Separately: Phase-out is $0 to $10,000.

If your income is near or above these thresholds, do not contribute directly to a Roth IRA. Instead, execute the two-step Backdoor Roth process.

Step-by-Step: Executing a Clean Backdoor Roth IRA

  1. Step 1: Open & Fund a Traditional IRA (Non-Deductible): Contribute up to the annual IRA limit ($7,000, or $8,000 if age 50+) into an empty Traditional IRA. Leave the funds in the settlement money market fund for 1–2 business days until the transfer settles.
  2. Step 2: Convert the Traditional IRA to Your Roth IRA: Initiate an online transfer of the entire balance from your Traditional IRA into your Roth IRA. Because you did not take a tax deduction on Step 1, your "cost basis" in the Traditional IRA is 100% after-tax dollars, resulting in $0 conversion tax (aside from pennies of money market interest).
  3. Step 3: Invest Inside the Roth IRA & File IRS Form 8606: Once the cash lands in your Roth IRA, invest it in your target asset allocation. At tax time, file IRS Form 8606 to report the non-deductible Traditional IRA contribution and subsequent conversion.

Warning: The IRS Pro-Rata Rule Trap (IRC Section 408(d)(2))

The single biggest mistake high earners make with a Backdoor Roth IRA is ignoring existing pre-tax IRA balances. Under the IRS Aggregation & Pro-Rata Rule, the IRS views all of your Traditional, Rollover, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs as one combined account on December 31 of the conversion year.

Pro-Rata Example:

  • You have $93,000 in an old 401(k) Rollover IRA (100% pre-tax money).
  • You make a $7,000 non-deductible contribution to a new Traditional IRA and convert $7,000 to a Roth IRA.
  • Your total IRA pool is $100,000 ($93,000 pre-tax + $7,000 after-tax).
  • Because only 7% ($7,000 ÷ $100,000) of your total IRA balance is after-tax basis, 93% of your $7,000 conversion ($6,510) is taxed as ordinary income!

How to Fix the Pro-Rata Problem Before December 31:

Before December 31 of the calendar year in which you perform a Backdoor Roth conversion, perform a "Reverse Rollover" of your pre-tax Rollover/Traditional IRA dollars into your current employer's 401(k) or Solo 401(k) plan. Employer 401(k) balances are excluded from the IRA Pro-Rata calculation, restoring your December 31 Traditional IRA balance to $0.

Leveling Up: The Mega Backdoor Roth 401(k)

While a standard Backdoor Roth IRA shelters $7,000–$8,000 per year, a Mega Backdoor Roth allows eligible employees and self-employed Solo 401(k) owners to shelter an additional $30,000 to $46,000+ per year into Roth accounts.

Two Plan Requirements for a Mega Backdoor Roth:

  1. Your 401(k) plan must allow After-Tax (Non-Roth) Contributions above the standard employee elective deferral limit ($23,500 in 2026) up to the total IRS Section 415(c) annual additions limit ($70,000 in 2026).
  2. Your plan must permit either In-Plan Roth Rollovers (automatic conversion to Roth 401(k)) or In-Service Distributions to an external Roth IRA.
