Overview & Strategic Context
The High-Low Method Calculator is a cost accounting tool used to separate mixed costs into their fixed and variable components. Mixed costs change with production volume but not in direct proportion, making them hard to budget for. By taking the highest and lowest activity levels in a dataset, this method provides a quick and simple way to estimate the variable cost per unit and the total fixed cost. This is essential for budgeting, forecasting, and break-even analysis.
Methodology & Formula
The method uses the slope formula:
Variable Cost/Unit = (Cost at High - Cost at Low) / (Activity at High - Activity at Low)
Once the variable rate is found, Fixed Cost is derived by subtracting total variable costs from the total cost at either the high or low point.
