Overview & Strategic Context
A CD Calculator is a financial tool that helps you determine the potential returns on a Certificate of Deposit (CD). A CD is a savings product offered by banks and credit unions that typically offers a fixed interest rate for a fixed period of time (term). The calculator estimates the total interest you will earn and the future value of your deposit at maturity.
Understanding Results
The results will show two key figures: 'Total Value at Maturity' and 'Total Interest Earned'. The Total Value is the sum of your initial deposit plus all the interest accumulated over the term. The Total Interest Earned shows exactly how much profit your money generated. You may also see an Annual Percentage Yield (APY) figure, which reflects the effective annual rate including the effect of compounding.
Methodology & Formula
The calculator uses the compound interest formula: A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where A is the future value, P is the principal investment amount, r is the annual interest rate (decimal), n is the number of times that interest is compounded per unit t, and t is the time the money is invested for in years.
